FAQS

  1. What's new about the board recruitment process this year?
This year, we've made important changes to our board recruitment process. We've moved away from open elections, opting for a more focused selection approach. After rigorous evaluation, the board will present an approved slate, and members will have the opportunity to comment on these Board Member selections. In January, there will be an open comment period where all members can share their insights and perspectives about the chosen board members. These changes ensure a more targeted and inclusive board, reflecting the diverse voices of our community and fostering a stronger, more collaborative organization. Your feedback remains instrumental in shaping our future.

  2. Can I nominate myself?
    Yes, self-nominations are allowed.

  3. Can I nominate someone who is not a Blacks in I/O member
No, all nominees must be active Blacks in I/O members. Please check the "Member Directory" to ensure your nominee is a BIOP member.

  4. How long is the term for Board Members?
    2 years

  5. What is the typical commitment for Board members?
Board members typically dedicate approximately 5 hours per week to our organization. It's important to note that our board is hands-on and actively involved in developing a new non-profit. Unlike many other boards that focus primarily on high-level strategy, our members engage in creating processes and implementing key initiatives that will benefit BIOP for years to come. This hands-on approach reflects our commitment to building a strong foundation for our organization's future success.

  6. What is the selection process like?

Candidates are invited for 2 interviews. This interview, conducted a board member, aims to understand the candidate's background, skills, and motivations for joining the board. After the interview, board members individually score the candidate using the rating scale for each criterion. These scores are kept confidential until the final decision. The interview scores are then factored into the final decision. While the interview scores are an essential component, the board's votes also play a crucial role. The candidate with the highest combined score, considering both interview scores and board votes, is selected for the board position.

  7. What is the criteria to become a Board Member?
    • Current member of Blacks in I/O in good standing
    • Leadership experience (all leadership experience will be considered)
    • Availability and commitment to participate in all Board meetings (1x per month)
    • Willingness to devote an estimated 3-5 hours weekly to the strategic efforts of the organization.
    • Ability to comply with the Board's Code of Conduct
    • Previous philanthropic or volunteer experience
    • Integrity and high ethical standards
    • Ability to work in diverse group settings
    • Demonstrated ability to think innovatively and strategically
